Concept

Fibonacci Ellipses

The Fibonacci Ellipses collection features arrangements of ellipses whose minor axis (height) and major axis (width) are two consecutive Fibonacci numbers. In this arrangement, the length of the major axis of one ellipse becomes the length of the minor axis of the next ellipse. It follows from the properties of Fibonacci numbers that the ratio of the two semi-axes is close to the golden ratio. Furthermore, the length of the major axis of the subsequent ellipse is the sum of the lengths of the major and minor semi-axes of the preceding ellipse.

Fibonacci Eyes

The artwork Fibonacci Eyes uses ellipses to draw nested, almost cat’s-eye-shaped objects. Due to the Fibonacci construction of the ellipses, the next smaller ellipse fits exactly into the next larger ellipse when rotated by 90º. As a result, each ellipse is both the pupil and the outer rim of an eye. The interlocking effect creates a strong sense of depth in the image.

Arrangement

The smallest ellipse is a 1×1 circle and has been coloured dark yellow as the origin of the image. It symbolises the innermost pupil of all eyes.

The next ellipse (1×2) is positioned horizontally. The subsequent ellipses are each rotated by 90º and positioned below the preceding ones, alternating between the complementary colours blue and orange.

The sequence can be continued to infinity.
