Concept

Fibonacci Scarf

The Fibonacci Scarf was created in collaboration with the Tessanda hand weaving mill in Val Müstair and forms the basic design for the silk scarf produced as part of the project. I have described the details of this fascinating project in a separate blog post.

Fibonacci Scarf is based on the Fibonacci Ladder collection, which features arrangements of linearly interwoven rectangles in two colours. The rectangles represent the rungs of a ladder and the spaces between them, all of which are the same width.

The height of the rungs, viewed from bottom to top, corresponds to the Fibonacci numbers. The height of the spaces between the rungs, viewed from top to bottom, also corresponds to the Fibonacci numbers.

Concept

Fibonacci Scarf is designed similarly to Fibonacci Ladder IV.

Four Fibonacci sequences are ‘woven’ into the pattern. Each sequence consists of a series of Fibonacci stripes that run across the scarf and have a width of 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21. The Fibonacci ratios give the scarf harmony and strength.

The image is mirror-symmetrical in the centre. From there, one Fibonacci sequence in navy blue runs to the left and one to the right. The other two sequences are coloured lime green. They run from the outside (right and left) to the inside and meet in the middle. The lime green stripes form the spaces between the navy blue stripes and vice versa.

This creates a symmetry between the stripes and the spaces between them, allowing the eye to see the stripes as spaces and the spaces as stripes. The viewer is thus placed in a state of tension and conflict as to which of the two ways of looking at it to choose. Both colours give each other space and take up space.

Fibonacci Scarf is available in four colours, as is the silk scarf: lime green, silver, light blue (ciel) and orange (poppy). The dark navy blue is common to all.

The silk scarf measures 55 x 215 cm. The artwork has been reduced by the golden ratio, so that its dimensions are 34 x 133 cm. The width of the smallest stripes of Fibonacci dimension 1 is thus 0.618 cm.

The artwork (like the scarf) has no top or bottom and can be hung either vertically or horizontally.
